How did you start drawing?
I can’t remember the exact time i started drawing, it must have been a thousand years ago… i do it for as long as i can remember. I was the nerdy kind of kid, always drawing, building LEGO and reading.
Where do you get inspiration from?
Music, nature, old books, the city, my kid, abook phrase, my love, internet, friends, movies… there is a whole world of eye candy out there that is so inspiring to me.
Do you imagine stories, draw a line first or get the whole idea before starting? How is your process?
Usually i have a whole idea of the illustration must look like. It’s in my head, with clear lining. Then i start sketching, and the idea gets a more realistic shape. I draw a few pencil lines and ink the lines soon after that. Or, when i am impatient, i start inking immediately. It’s always a bit of a struggle to decide when a illustration is finished. Sometimes i draw to much, i can loose myself in drawing details. And then i make another drawing, just until i think it is right.
Who’s your favorite artist?
Not just one, i have a whole bunch of amazingly talented people in my favorite-list… A few illustrators, painters, photographers, designers and crafters that inspire me are Fumi Koike, Diana Sudyka, Georgia Hill, Louis Reith, Ward Zwart, Gijs Frieling, Lili Scratchy, Carl Kleiner, Camilla Engman, Mara Piccione, Arjen Veldman, Katt Frank, Lizzy Stewart, Sandra Juto, Maira Kalman…
If you were one of your characters which one will you be?
Well, I just visited Berlin. What a wonderful city that is. So much to see, so much creative energy… I am a bit overwhelmed by it so that is why i choose a character i made of a hare that hides her eyes a bit. Time for a short hibernation now!
